Case study: Cruse Cumbria

Cruse is a registered charity with branches throughout the United Kingdom. This project was for the Cumbria branch, which provides free and confidential support to individuals and families, helping them to come to terms with bereavement.

Before the project

Cruse Cumbria had an existing website built some years earlier. This site had served Cruse well but was beginning to show its age. The existing site did not use a content management system and so could not be easily edited by the Cruse staff; and it wasn't mobile-friendly.

How I helped

Working with Cruse, a slimmed-down site structure was agreed which focused on the key content. Given the sensitive nature of the service, photography was not available from the client, so some stock photos were used showing people, to provide visual interest and make the site a little more involving. Fundraising events were made very easy to add, and they were displayed in date order and automatically removed when the date of the event passed. Cruse wanted to build a mailing list for news and event announcements, so forms linking to MailChimp were added to the site. The new site has been built using my preferred content management system, which has been designed for speed, versatility and security, making it easy for Cruse staff to edit and update the site. The new site is mobile-friendly. A private area of the site can be used to make a wide range of documents available only to Cruse's staff and approved volunteers.
