Case study: Rydal Hall, Ambleside

Rydal Hall is a venue used for holidays, meetings and Christian retreats close to Rydal Water near Ambleside. Accommodation options include full board in 30 bedrooms in the Hall, plus self-catering holiday cottages, a bunk barn and a campsite with camping pods as well as space for tents. Rydal Hall is owned by the diocese of Carlisle.

Before the project

Rydal Hall had an existing website built in Wordpress. The site structure was a little confusing with very different accommodation options being displayed together on the same page. Rydal Hall were frustrated at being unable to add content as quickly and flexibly as they wanted - for example, last minute offers and announcements - because these options had not been designed in from the start and the previous web designer was slow to react to requests for help. The most recent "news" was over a year old. In addition, the existing site had a major search engine optimisation issue, which was blocking search engines from accessing the site.

How I helped

The urgent SEO issue was quickly resolved, before even starting to build a new site. Working with the client, a new website structure was agreed which gave separate pages to each type of accommodation - this further enhanced SEO as it allowed each page to target different search phrases. The visual design features a greater variety of the client's photography, much of which is stunning given the scenic location. Various types of content have been made easy to add, edit and delete, including events, news items, special offers, announcements, tariffs, testimonials and videos. The site was transferred from Wordpress to my preferred content management system, which has been designed for speed (with a significant improvement over the previous site), versatility and security.
